When Remco Evenepoel (Lotto-Quick Step) switched his goal to winning the King of the Mountains competition, he went all in. Stage 18 he got into the break away and then claimed the maximum points on every climb except the finale. On the penultimate climb of the day he dropped the last of his break away companions, Max Poole (DSM-Firmenich) as the crowd of cycling fans pressed in.
