Getting Established
Usually, a breakaway goes from the moment the peloton leaves the neutral start zone. Today, riders attempted to get away and were reeled back in time after time. With 80 kilometers covered it was still failed attack after another as the peloton approached the first big climb of the day. This mixture seemed to contain a member of just about every team in the Giro, which is often what is needed to make a break stick. But the peloton wasn't yet ready to let this group go, it seems it was a little too big. Big breaks can often generate as much speed as the peloton, so the GC men or the sprinters will try to control just how many guys slip up the road. Some of those who had managed to get into this group were, Maxime Bouet (Etixx Qucikstep), Salvatore Puccio (Sky), Ruben Fernandez (Movistar), Stig Broeckx (Lotto Soudal) and Cedric Pineau (FDJ).
