Black Power
This image has burned itself into my minds eye for over fifty years. With the current political environment and the fight to end systemic racism, it became an image I wanted to explore in my art. In the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City, Tommie Smith won the Gold Medal along with his teammate taking third in the 200 yard dash. On the podium as the USA National Anthem played, Smith bowed his head and race his fist in what was known as the black power salute. He was vilified for his action, as other sports heros have been for speaking out about racism. This is a stained glass piece presented it its own light box frame.
