While Peter Sagan (Bora-Hansgrohe) busied himself loading up on drinks and energy bars, Baptiste Planckaert (Katusha) managed to catch back up with the chasing group of favorites. Planckaert had crashed with his teammate Tony Martin and another rider, neither of whom were able to rejoin the business end of the race.
