Racing for Seconds
John Degenkolb (Giant Alpecin) is sitting just six seconds back from the Maillot Jaune having picked up the three second bonus from the first intermediate sprint of the stage. Now he is fighting with Michael Matthews (Orica GreenEdge) for the best of the rest (the solo break is still out in front at this point). Matthews is just behind the big German and doesn't want to concede any more time than he has to. It is a surprise to see Degenkolb contesting the intermediate sprints, his teammate, Marcel Kittel, left them to the other sprinters in the last Tour de France. I guess it isn't a team wide strategy to only go for stage wins.
