A Bobble in the Corner
Nairo Quintana (Movistar) knew he had to put in the time trial of his life today. He was already over a minute behind the Maillot Jaune of Chris Froome (Sky) and Froome is far better against the clock than the diminutive Colombian. Quintana was trying to carry as much speed as he could into every corner possible, but time trial bikes are not known for their cornering. Add to the notorious handling of the aerodynamic bicycles the high winds that have plagued the peloton for the past couple of stages and it was a day frought with nerves, bobbles and lost seconds. Fortunately it seems that all of the riders stayed tires down (perhaps Julian Alaphilippe had a spill) or at least didn't come to harm. Half way through the course the leader of Movistar had already lost over fifty seconds to his rivals. That is time that he will hope to make up in the Alps in the coming days. He can be comforted knowing that the second time trial in this Tour will be an uphill effort - something more suited to the climber from Colombia.
