After a couple of attacks on the final climb of the day up the Cote de Saint Ferreol, all covered by Peter Sagan (Tinkoff), they all decided to cover his moves instead. Sagan had already garnered enough points to take back the Green Jersey in the points competition, but no one suspected that he didn't want another stage win as well. Orica-BikeExchange was playing a numbers game. Luke Durbridge had driven the pace up to the final climb and then left it to Daryl Impey to launch repetitive attacks to weaken the legs of Sagan. His teammate, Michael Matthews just kept everything in front of him waiting to launch the sprint with the freshest legs in the break. Having launched an unsuccessful attack himself, Edvald Boasson Hagen (Dimension Data) kept an eye on the Orica duo and Sagan.
