Anthony Perez (Cofidis) had joined the break away in hopes of being the Frenchman to win a stage of the Tour on Bastille Day (it hasn't happen in at least five years). Yet, by being off the front, he could suck up the lion share of the King of the Mountain points thus protecting the Maillot a Pois of his teammate Simon Geschke back in the peloton.
