After the Col d'Izoard Simon Geschke (CCC) wanted to keep the groups advantage growing. He looked behind to find Tim Wellens (Lotto Soudal) and Romain Bardet (Ag2r La Mondiale) not looking like they wanted to put in the effort. Or it could be that he wanted another look at the woman on the side of the road. Geschke had two teammates somewhere nearby and wanted to give them a head start up the Col du Galibier.
