Sylvain Chavanel and De Marchi jumped out from the leading break away with a vain attempt to make a long run to the finish ahead of the Malliot Jeune group. As the rest of the morning break was absorbed by the peloton, these two dangled at about a minute and a half ahead of the rest, until they started the final climb towards the finish
