Nothing ventured, nothing gained, as the old saying goes. Sadly for the trio of escapees (David Tanner - IAM Cycling has already returned to the peloton), it was going to be nothing gained for Alexis Gougeard (AG2R) and Patrick Shaw (UniSA-Australia). They must have been curious why the Tinkoff lead peloton had bothered to chase them in, but competitors must compete.
